What does it take to build out a Twitter team?

Filed in Asset Management

In a recent article, the highlights of Vanguard’s Twitter launch efforts were highlighted. Today, we find out more what it takes to build out a successful Twitter team.

Building a Twitter TeamTo build a successful Twitter team, it is interesting to take a look at the mix of skill-sets that Vanguard has identified as necessary based nine months of planning before launching their Twitter presence. In all, six key executives are expected to contribute from the following functional backgrounds (1):

  • Retail Servicing and Call Center:
    • Alba Martinez leads the Retail Services Contact Center, which provides client services and investment solutions to millions of individual investors.
  • Corporate Communications:
    • Andy Clarke is a principal in Vanguard Corporate Communications. Mr. Clarke has more than 18 years of experience in the financial services industry.
  • Economic Commentary & Investment Analysis:
    • David Stinnett manages a team of senior investment analysts in the Vanguard Portfolio Review Department. During his 13 years at Vanguard, he has worked in a variety of roles, including as a corporate strategy analyst and as a department head in the Institutional Asset Management business.
    • Liqian Ren, Ph.D. is a senior economist/investment analyst with Vanguard Investment Counseling and Research.
    • Maria Bruno, CFP® is an investment analyst in Vanguard Investment Strategy Group. Her areas of expertise include portfolio construction and financial planning, with concentrations in retirement income and wealth management. Ms. Bruno has more than 19 years of experience in the financial services industry.
  • Public Relations:
    • Rebecca Katz serves as a principal in public relations and company spokesperson for Vanguard. A 13-year veteran at Vanguard, Ms. Katz has also served as an analyst in Vanguard Portfolio Review Department, which oversees the institutional money managers responsible for Vanguard funds.

The emphasis on economic commentary and investment analysis shows that Vanguard sees Twitter as means to increase the distribution of their research and commentary. However, should issues arise, it is important to note that Vanguard’s Twitter leadership also includes the requisite involvement from retail client service, communications and PR.

It seems as if many investment firms are focusing on economic and market commentary for their social media presence, including Twitter.

Hi Susan,

I agree with your assessment of the sort of content that a lot of investment firms are utilizing on social media. I would personally like to see a greater focus on educational material and direct portfolio manager commentary as investment management firms move forward with social media.
